Buffalo slot online: where it is legal, how it plays and what it pays

Buffalo, Aristocrat’s stampede-themed casino-floor favorite, has been a real-money online slot in the US since September 2023, when it launched first in New Jersey. As of October 2026, Buffalo-branded online games are verified in four states: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Connecticut. The online classic keeps the floor game’s sunset wilds and coin-triggered free games, but it has no linked progressive jackpot, and each casino runs it at one of two published return-to-player (RTP) settings: 91.821% or 94.724%.

Where and since when can you play Buffalo online?

Aristocrat’s online division, then called Anaxi, announced on September 5, 2023 that Buffalo was coming online for the first time that week, starting in New Jersey. Other states followed over the next two years as more casinos added it.

Legal states as of October 2026

• Verified: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Connecticut.
• Unconfirmed: West Virginia. Caesars brought the first Aristocrat Interactive titles to the state on March 24, 2026 and listed Buffalo as coming, but we have not confirmed that it is live there.
• No evidence found: Delaware and Rhode Island.

Real-money play is only for adults 21 and over who are physically inside one of those states when they play. Casino lobbies change, so the where to play Buffalo online page tracks which casinos added which Buffalo game, and when.

One name, nine games

When Cash Express Legend Buffalo launched in December 2025, Aristocrat Interactive called it the ninth Buffalo title online in North America. The ones we have verified in US states:

• Buffalo, the classic (September 2023).
• Buffalo Gold Collection (late 2023), which adds a Gold Bonus bet and turns other animals into buffalo during free games.
• Buffalo Chief, a 2020 floor game, online with 3,456 ways and fixed Grand, Major and Minor prizes.
• Buffalo Gold Revolution (New Jersey, October 2024).
• Buffalo Gold Max Power (New Jersey, December 2024), with up to 46,656 ways.
• Jackpot Carnival Buffalo (July 2025), with four progressive jackpots.
• Cash Express Legend Buffalo (December 2025).

Not every floor version made the move. As of October 2026 we found no online release of Buffalo Grand or Buffalo Link.

How does Buffalo play online?

The classic plays all five reels on every spin for a reel cost of 40 credits, multiplied by the bet multiplier you choose. Wins use Aristocrat’s Xtra Reel Power ways-pays: matching symbols on adjacent reels, starting from the left, pay wherever they sit on each reel, which BetMGM describes as 1,024 ways. The sunset wild lands only on the middle three reels. How Buffalo plays online covers the symbols, the bet and a side-by-side table of the classic, Gold Collection and Chief.

How do the Buffalo free games work?

Three, four or five coin scatters award 8, 15 or 20 free games. During the round, any two coins add five more games, and each sunset wild in a win multiplies it by 2 or 3. The Buffalo bonus feature walks through retriggers, stacked multipliers and the different bonus rules in Gold Collection and Chief.

What does Buffalo pay back, and what changed from the floor?

The official rules list two configurations, 91.821% and 94.724%. Pennsylvania rule pages show Caesars on the lower setting and DraftKings, FanDuel, Golden Nugget, Rush Street and PlayLive on the higher one: a gap of 2.9 percentage points on the same game. On a casino floor, payback is set by each casino and is not published per machine, so the online figure tells you nothing about the cabinet you remember.

The online classic also lacks the linked progressive some floor machines carry. CDC Gaming Reports said in January 2024 that the studio sometimes adjusts an online game’s math model to make up for that. Buffalo RTP and volatility puts the gap into dollars and explains why casinos disagree on how volatile the game is. For the wider picture, see what changes when a slot moves online.

Can you play Buffalo for free?

Yes, but only for virtual coins in free social casino apps, which pay no real money or prizes. Playing Buffalo free names the official apps and explains what free play can and cannot tell you about the real-money game.
