A progressive jackpot grows because a slice of every eligible bet is added to it until someone wins it, then it resets to a seed amount and starts again. On legal US online casinos that money comes from one of three places: the game itself, a studio network that links several casinos, or the online casino’s own jackpot that sits on top of many games. Each one changes the game’s published return, and only the jackpot winner collects the difference.

Fixed jackpots, studio progressives and casino networks

Before you chase a prize, check which kind you are looking at.

Type Who funds it Example on this site What changes for you
Fixed in-game jackpots Built into the game’s math Rakin’ Bacon!, the Huff N’ More Puff wheel, Buffalo Chief’s Grand, Major and Minor The prize is a set multiple of your bet; nothing builds up
Studio progressive A share of bets on that game, often across several casinos MegaJackpots Cleopatra, 88 Fortunes Jackpot Festival, Lightning Link’s shared Grand The base game’s RTP is lower; the pool keeps growing
Online casino network A share of bets across many games at one operator DraftKings’ own jackpots Paid on top of whatever game you are playing
Floor and online link Bets from casino machines and an online game together IGT’s Wheel of Fortune link in New Jersey (2023) One pool fed by both sides

The rules screen says which type a game uses and what you must bet to qualify. Some jackpots are open only at a minimum stake. IGT’s Wheel of Fortune Gold Spin Triple Red Hot 7s, for example, makes the jackpot available at bets of $5 and up, or in its bonus at $7 or $10, and pays it in 20 annual installments.

What a progressive costs in RTP

The jackpot is not free money: it is paid for out of the regular returns. The clearest example is IGT’s Cleopatra. The standard online game lists a return of 95.02%. MegaJackpots Cleopatra, the progressive version IGT launched in New Jersey in September 2018 with a $500,000 seed, lists 92.48%. That gap of about 2.5 points of every dollar wagered is what builds the prize.

Pennsylvania’s rules make the trade explicit. When a minimum bet is needed to win a progressive, the game’s return excluding the jackpot still has to meet the state’s minimum, and the payout calculation may not count any jackpot above its reset level (58 Pa. Code § 810a.11). In practice that means you pay into the pool on every spin and see the benefit only if you hit it. For the regular base-game figures, see Cleopatra RTP and volatility.

A wide-area progressive (WAP) links the same jackpot across several casinos. Online, the rules are written by each state:

  • New Jersey allows wide-area progressives “including multi-State links and links between online and retail slot systems”, under a system agreement the Division of Gaming Enforcement must approve (N.J.A.C. 13:69O-1.10).
  • Pennsylvania lets two or more online licensees run a shared wide-area progressive with the Gaming Control Board’s prior written approval and an approved agreement on funding and duties (58 Pa. Code § 819a.2).

Two linked prizes on this site’s games show how it works. Light & Wonder said its US online WAP jackpots premiered with 88 Fortunes Jackpot Festival, and the first one paid $308,914.50 on a $2.64 spin at Caesars Sportsbook & Casino in New Jersey in June 2023. In May 2023 IGT launched what it called the first US omnichannel wide-area progressive: an online Wheel of Fortune game linked to 18 Wheel of Fortune machines on New Jersey casino floors, with a $500,000 reset.

The record: a casino network jackpot, not a game jackpot

The largest US online casino jackpot reported so far was $22,407,248.55, won on a $0.20 spin at DraftKings Casino in Michigan on November 26, 2025, according to trade press. The player was on Light & Wonder’s Huff N’ Even More Puff, but the prize came from DraftKings’ own jackpot network, not from the game. The game’s own wheel jackpots are fixed multiples of the bet (Huff N’ Puff bonus explained).

That distinction matters when you read a headline. A record on a named game does not mean the game pays more; it means that casino’s network landed on that spin. Jackpots this size are extremely rare events, and the odds of any single spin hitting one are tiny.

Before you chase a jackpot

  • Read the rules screen for the minimum qualifying bet. Playing below it funds nothing you can win.
  • Compare the RTP of the jackpot and non-jackpot versions of the same game where both exist.
  • Treat the jackpot as a lottery ticket attached to the game, not as part of what you expect to get back.
  • Set the budget first. Our responsible gambling page lists the limit and self-exclusion tools available in legal states.

Questions readers ask

Do progressive jackpot slots have a lower RTP?

Usually the base game returns less, because part of every bet funds the jackpot. IGT's online Cleopatra lists 95.02% while its MegaJackpots Cleopatra lists 92.48%. The difference goes into the prize pool, which only a jackpot winner collects.

What is the biggest online slot jackpot won in the US?

Trade press reported $22,407,248.55 won on a $0.20 spin at DraftKings Casino in Michigan on November 26, 2025, and called it the largest US online casino jackpot on record. It came from DraftKings' own jackpot network, paid while the player was on Huff N' Even More Puff.

Can an online slot jackpot be linked to machines in a casino?

Yes, where the state allows it. New Jersey's rules cover links between online and retail slot systems, and IGT linked an online Wheel of Fortune game to 18 Wheel of Fortune machines on New Jersey casino floors in May 2023.
