Can you play 88 Fortunes free? The official app and what free play cannot show you

Yes: the official way to play 88 Fortunes free is 88 Fortunes Casino Slot Games, a social casino app on the Apple App Store and Google Play from SciPlay, Light & Wonder’s social games division. It plays for virtual coins only, and its App Store listing says it offers no real-money gambling, so nothing won in it can be cashed out. Free play is a fair way to learn the look and the features, but it tells you little about what a real-money session will cost.

The official 88 Fortunes app

The App Store listing for 88 Fortunes Casino Slot Games names Phantom EFX, Inc. as the seller and carries a 21+ rating. The same app is on Google Play for Android phones. Inside it you play the 88 Fortunes theme in a social casino format, with coins that have no cash value.

Two points from the listing are worth keeping in mind:

• No real-money gambling. The listing says so plainly. There is no prize to withdraw, however many coins you build up.
• 21 and over. The listing is age-rated 21+, the same age limit that applies to real-money online casinos in the states that license them.

Who makes it: SciPlay and Light & Wonder

SciPlay describes itself as the social games division of Light & Wonder. It was listed on the stock market for a time, and Light & Wonder completed its buy-out of SciPlay’s remaining public shares effective October 23, 2023, at $22.95 a share, according to SciPlay’s filing with the SEC. That is why the free app and the real-money game come from the same parent company, even though they are run as separate products.

SciPlay also publishes Dancing Drums Slots Casino, a free app built on 88 Fortunes’ sister game from the same Bally Duo Fu Duo Cai family. It works the same way: virtual coins, no cash prizes.

Can you play a free demo at a real-money casino?

Light & Wonder’s own game page for 88 Fortunes has a “Play Demo” button, but that page is a supplier showroom for casino operators, not a consumer service. We could not confirm that licensed US online casinos offer 88 Fortunes in a free demo mode. If a licensed casino does offer a free mode, it will be in that casino’s own lobby. Do not use a third-party site that claims to offer the real-money game free, as it may not be running the genuine game.

What free play can and cannot tell you

Free play is useful for:

• learning the screen layout, the gold symbols and the bet buttons;
• seeing what the Fu Bat jackpot feature and the free-spins round look like;
• deciding whether you like the game before you consider spending money on it.

It cannot tell you:

• the real-money RTP. Nothing in the app’s listing ties its payouts to the 96% version on Light & Wonder’s US listing, so a lucky run in the app says nothing about real-money returns;
• the jackpot values your casino’s version pays, which depend on the version and your stake;
• how a budget holds up. Coins that cost nothing do not teach you how quickly a real bankroll can go.
